2017 News
On Saturday 23rd December the VIC Singing Group performed at the Tesco in Haslingden. It was the last performance of 2017 and £596 was raised. We would like to thank the customers for the generosity, the staff, our Singing Group members and collectors who made this staggering amount so close to Xmas possible.

After a fantastic response for our request for food to be donated for Xmas hampers for veterans who are on their own this year over Xmas. We managed make up in excess of 30 hampers and we delivered them all before Xmas Eve. Tesco in Haslingden also kindly donated some toys which we gave out to those with young children. We estimated that over 300 meals went out this year. The remaining food was made up into food parcels for any veteran in need over the Xmas period that came into the centre during our Xmas opening.
VIC would like to thank all those who have donated food, cash donations, and offers of help and messages of support. We wish all those who have made this possible a very Happy Xmas and New Year. It’s not possible to name all those individuals, groups and organisations who donated food, but they included; Imogen aged 10 from Westhome School in Blackburn called in and donated some food as part of her act of kindness for the day, Tesco, Nisa, CO-OP, Angie's Angels, RAFT, Home Instead and the CMHT Rossendale. We couldn’t believe how generous people have been, and especially those who received a hamper this year were very thankful. |

Final Veterans Coffee Morning for 2017 at the Sandbag Cafe in Heywood. Plenty of mince pies, chocolate and good cheer to go around... as well as some lovely cake to celebrate Cliffords birthday, 83 years young. As always, lots of laughter and some good old forces banter whilst sharing their plans for a good Christmas and New Year.

On Wednesday 14th December VIC held their annual Xmas meal for our members where we had around 50 seated. The raffle hampers were won by Simon Peace, Jimmy Elsworth and David Hoyle. The meal was served by the Reservists from HMP Eaglet, RAF and Army.
This Xmas meal was only able to go ahead due to the generosity of those who donated money towards the veteran’s meal. The money that our members had already paid was stolen during the break-in at the VIC Centre. |
Burglars broke into the VIC centre in Haslingden during the early hours of Friday 17th November. The alarm triggered at the VIC Centre at 05.40 and a member of staff was on site six minutes later, but the burglars had already fled.
CCTV recorded them climbing over the wall from the car park into the back yard and spending around 45 minutes trying unsuccessfully to break into a workshop and the building. When they failed to gain entry they then picked up a memorial stone inscribed with ‘Lest We Forget’ and smashed a frosted glass panel. Once inside, the pair kicked their way into the office and stole around £1000 from locked cash boxes in locked filing cabinets. Charity tins containing money raised from selling craft items made by veterans along with donation boxes were also taken; fortunately the Poppy Appeal money had already been handed over to The Royal British Legion. Chief Executive Liz Hamilton said: “They stole all the cash they could find. A lot had been paid as deposits by veterans for our Christmas meal next month and this is money that many members will not be able to afford to pay again. “There was utter disbelief in the centre and everyone is shocked and disgusted at what has happened. “The CCTV shows a man accompanied by what is believed to be a woman and both are of average height and of slight build. The CCTV pictures have been taken by the police. Many of our member’s feel that VIC is their home and we would like to thank those who offered their help and support, and to our members who have helped to secure the centre. We believe one of the individuals attempted to break in on the 30th October and was clearly seen trying to use same methods of entry. Fortunately we had already increased security at those points. We were overwhelmed with offers of support and messages, and donations to cover the money that was stolen. VIC would like to thank everybody who has donated money to cover the cost of the Xmas meals for the veterans, and because of those generous donations we were able to cover the cost of all the veterans’ meals. Words can't explain how much we appreciate this at VIC and our members are feeling very humbled by the support and donations made |

VIC was the charity chosen for the M60 Ride of Respect ride. Over 1400 bikes setting off from the M62 West bound Birch services to travel around the M60 in one continuous ring of red. A good day to remember. This year has been busier than last year and we have noticed the increased number of the public who are attending the services. |

At the VIC Sandbag Café in Heywood on the 14th November, two Standards were officially handed over to the Vicar of St Luke’s CE Church on York Street. The two standards; one for the British Legion which pre-dates 1971 and the other a Royal Navy standard were discovered after a church closed will now be on permanent display. The historic flags were found in Grade II Listed St James CE Church on Tower Street, Heywood. The congregation has relocated to hold services in the church hall.
Members of Heywood Veterans’ Association, HVA, were in attendance along with the Mayor of Rochdale Councillor Ian Duckworth, a former Royal Corps of Signals soldier. Rochdale Council Armed Forces Officer Caen Matthews contacted Project Worker Liz Davies, who runs the Sandbag Café, to see whether they could be officially handed over there as the café is now the meeting place for the veterans in Heywood. |

We were up against other very worthy third sector organisations including Dig In West whom we have worked with since 2012 and Sale Sharks.
VIC won this category. A big thank you to our members and partners that made this possible. See more VIC awards The citation for VIC was: Veterans In Communities is one of the many brilliant grass roots organisations that we work with. What sets it apart is its commitment to community and the reintegration of veterans into civilian society. VIC offers a wide range of programmes that bring people together, develop skills and provide support. And their staff and volunteers are enthusiastic, committed and have a real belief in their work. When you visit VIC you can feel the family environment and the sense of positivity from everyone there and that can only be a good thing for veterans who feel that they need help taking the next step. |

The cave today is referred to as Dalton's Cave, and lies beneath the crags and vegetation of Castle Crag. Many have searched for the location of the cave and have had limited success. At the end June VIC members were invited to a Manchester Mosque. It was a great experience for our members to meet everybody at the Mosque, learn and understand their culture and to celebrate the end of their fasting. We received this letter from the Mosque.
I really did enjoy the company of you and your colleagues, especially the two that attended first, one was from the army and the other the navy. I didn’t know what to expect when I heard veterans were attending the if tar but you try to remain open minded and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the company of all of you. In fact, I learned much throughout all the visits after engaging with our guests and you know what, it’s a two way street, we learn from each other. It really enriched me and my knowledge. It takes people like you to take that step into the unknown and when you get there you realise it’s not as bad as you feared. If more people from our communities took time to get to know each other we would all be in a better place as it would remove much of the doubt and suspicion. Keep up the good work and if there is anything I can do to assist you in the future please do let me know. I look forward to welcoming you again in the future. Hopefully through such interaction we can help break down barriers. Please pass my regards on to your colleagues for attending and for the very kind and generous donation, which I have put towards the Feed the Needy Project, where we help families with a month’s worth of food supply. On the 6th April a works party started to secure parts of the perimeter of St James School after vandals destroyed the shed we had previously renovated and erected.
We received some sad news on this morning of the 29th March, the shed we had put up at St James School in Haslingden had a further visit the previous evening. We had hoped to attempt repairs after it had been vandalised on previous occasions so the children could continue to use during break times. Unfortunatly the vandalism caused has made this impossible.
After we reported the last time spat of vandalism, we had many offers of sheds but a local resident came forward and offered to fund a replacement, this offer now means we can replace it with a new childrens shed. We had hoped that we wouldn't need to take him up on his generous offer but the recent damage caused us to rethink our plans. Although the school has replaced the fencing with metal security fencing there is still a few areas where they can get it. We heard that the children were very upset when they came and saw the damage. However we will continue with the work we are doing with the school and once the areas are secure we will install the replacement. |
On March 24, four members returned to London to the Park Plaza, Westminster Bridge Hotel where the winners of the 2017 Soldiering On awards were announced in an Awards ceremony hosted by former news reader Angela Rippon and Cassidy Little an ex Royal Marine and winner of BBC's Strictly in Aid of Comic Relief.

On Thursday 2nd March we organised another of our social trips, we took a number of our members to Leeds Armouries. It was a long day but everybody enjoyed themselves.
|
At the beginning of March we received some sad news from St James CE School in Haslingden.
The children were starting to enjoy using the shed during break times and before we could hand it over to the school it was systermatically vandalised by local teenages. Unfortunatly we tried to repair but the last damage that was caused meant it was no longer worth continuing with the build as they kept returning and causing more damage. The school has had to install security fencing at cost to themslves to try to stop people getting into the grounds at night. The work we are doing at the school wasn't only to provide this shed where the children could use to keep garden tools and as a potting shed but to help with the garden area in that part of the school. After a disappointing start VIC is continuing with the work to get the raised beds ready for planting flowers that the children have asked for; Roses, forget me nots, Poppies, Mint, strawberry plants, marigolds, sunflowers, tulips, daffodils and herbs. |

On Thursday 9th February two VIC members, Liz Hamilton and Bob Elliott were invited to a champagne reception at the House of Lords in London as finalists in the national Soldiering On Awards Soldiering On Awards - Charity.
It was an opportunity to share the work of VIC with the five other finalists in the category Working Together and to meet some of the judges. The other finalists in the Working Together category are: Army Training Regiment Winchester; Brunei Stables Pony/Saddle Club; Forces Friends Project; The Invicta Foundation and Veterans Information Network Nottinghamshire. On March 24, four members will return to London to the Park Plaza, Westminster Bridge Hotel when the winners will be announced in a ceremony hosted by former news reader Angela Rippon. We would not have got to be a finalist for this award without all the effort that all our members have put in over the last five years. It is a team award and recognition should go to everyone who has had a part to play in VIC being selected as a finalist; there are too many names to mention. As well as meeting the other finalists, finding out what they did and explaining the work of VIC, we also spoke to British Forces Broadcasting Service. The Soldiering On Awards provide national recognition for the outstanding achievements of those who have served their country and individuals and groups who work together with the Armed Forces Community. The Awards’ aim is simple: to encourage support for the UK’s Armed Forces Community by nationally recognising the achievements of groups, individuals and organisations that support this community. |
On the 24th January we assembled a shed at St James's School in Haslingden that we were given last year and the original thought was to refurbish it and put it on our allotment in Helmshore. However we were asked by St James's School to help on their garden area for their pupils to grow things and have outdoors seating area. We offered them the shed once it was refurbished for the children to use as a potting shed. Jimmy Kudritzski started working on it last year. There is other work we are planning over the next few months.

It was also a good opportunity for our members who wanted to come in and talk to others.
