Sandbag Café Preston
The VIC Sandbag Café was relocated from Longridge to Preston in April 2024. It was launched on St Georges Day at St Georges Church on the 23rd April, this outreach differs from the other two Sandbag Cafe's we established as it is a joint venture with the Lancashire Armed Forces Association.
VIC had started working with Col David Waters RE from the Lancashire Armed Forces Association in 2023 as they had plans in establishing a veterans outreach service for the Armed Forces Community in Preston and it seemed an ideal opportunity to establish a town centre venue where two organisations can provide a similar veterans drop-in again after the Wings Centres had to close down .
The Sandbag Café is being run by our outreach worker Steve Butterworth and Lancashire Armed Forces Association member Paul Baker.
Both Steve and Paul have years of experience of supporting veterans and will be able to deal with any welfare concerns and issues the members of the Sandbag Café may have. So this outreach will have two purposes:
An informal social activity for veterans to enjoy each others company and a bit banter at the same time.
Secondary to deal with any issues veterans may be experiencing.
Lancashire Armed Forces Association led by Col David Waters RE have over 400 members and that is just one of the Associations that operate across the area, and the drop-in is open to any veteran and their families from other Associations or veteran groups or you don't have to be in any of them and just want a meet with other like-minded people. It regularly gets attendance of 20 plus each week.
