Rossendale Allotment
At the end of 2015 we took over an allotment in Helmshore. The Dig for VIC garden was a great success in the summer of 2015, where we had a good crop of vegetables in the raised beds we built.
The allotment has seen many changes to the layout since we started on it in 2015, all of the raised beds have been made by our members on our Veterans In Production (VIP) project.
The allotment is used by our members; not only to grow vegetables and flowers which can be either sold in the community or the members can take them home themselves to supplement their diet as part of the 5 steps to health and well being. It will also be a social activity for our members to meet outside of the VIC Centre and learn new gardening skills.
It is only with the many donations of plants and seeds, a shed, wooden pallets, water containers, soil, bark chippings have meant this allotment has developed into what it is now. Our volunteer members have put so many hours into this allotment and without their support and some grant funding though the ABF Soldier Charity will ensure it can only go from strength to strength for many years to come.
For more information on the allotment and how to get involved please contact Steve Butterworth on either stevebutterworth@vic.org.uk or 01706 833180

Princes Trust ACCROSS Team 9 2016 Community Project
During the month of the May members of the Prince’s Trust ACCROSS Team 9 helped plant and prepare our allotment for a fruitful future.
They helped our members with the raised beds, raised beds have fruit and veg growing, coloured planters, a compost bin and a totem pole that shows the distances from Haslingden to areas around the world where the UK armed forces have served.
The Prince’s Trust operates a 12-week programme for 16 to 25 years old who are not in employment, education or training. The scheme is run by Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.
On the 4th June they held their handover presentation where the Deputy Mayor of Rossendale Councillor Colin Crawforth was invited to cut a ribbon to officially declare their project finished. Invited guests included families, local community members, and Lancashire Fire and Rescue representatives.
