Bob Ross painting Classes
The painting in the style of Bob Ross classes started in 2015, the popularity of these classes has grown and we currently hold a monthly class at the VIC Centre in Haslingden.
We have only limited spaces on each class so it is a first come first served basis. Classes start from 10.30 am until 3.30 pm so you will need a packed lunch but tea and coffee is supplied. Cost is £45 per person. For more information please contact at darrenhorsnell@vic.org.uk or call the main office 01706 833180
You do not have to be an experienced painter to join the class as many who have come have limited painting experience or have even had no experience.

VIC 'In the style of Bob Ross' classes
During the class on the 26th January 2025 we put together a short selection of pictures taken by Catherine Smyth Media that were taken on the day to show what happens at a typical In the Style of Bob Ross class.

COVID 19 Bob Ross art classes
Before the Covid 19 Lockdown we ran monthly 'painting in the style of Bob Ross classes'. Unfortunately the VIC Centre went into the COVID lockdown and the classes continued via zoom. Here are some wonderful works of art that some of the guys and girls have completed. Remember these are done via zoom and not in our normal class group.
Michelle, from Bury, said: “I enjoy the Bob Ross’s classes because it is therapeutic and I spend time with really great friendly people.
“For me, I can enjoy the painting and forget my cares. It is not so much about what painting is being done but when I can afford to attend.”
When she had finished her painting, she added: “I have enjoyed the class and I couldn’t do it without Darren’s instruction; it makes it.
“My dad David was a veteran and he started coming to the classes and then he brought me. This kept him going throughout Covid. He just passed away this Christmas.
“It is really nice to come back and paint, I have done this painting for him and it will be going on my wall.”
Lesley, from Edenfield, has completed more than 30 Bob Ross classes and said she had a ‘houseful’ of paintings.
She said: “I started coming because I love to paint and this is very sociable and I get to be with my friends.
“My husband came with me for about three years and I now have six paintings on the wall of my conservatory and I rotate them.”
She said the latest painting was definitely being added to the ones on rotation in the conservatory.
Veteran Phil attends Bury Breakfast Club and VIC in Haslingden and was one of the VIC volunteer marshals on the Covid vaccination hubs.
Phil, from Burnley, said: “This is only my second Bob Ross class and I have got all the art stuff at home, still waiting for me to use it. The first Bob Ross painting I did, I didn’t really like what I had done, but I sold it and it went for £70.
“This was my Christmas present from my wife Jane. I am here because I have got to start doing some things for me and maybe I will now use the paints that I have at home.”
He was pleased with his finished painting and, this time, it is not for sale.
“The class gives me relaxation and a little bit of me time. I first started painting Bob Ross pictures at home watching Bob Ross on DVD and I would copy what he did exactly.
“Those first paintings were very formulaic, but with Darren’s intervention this class is a bit more free.
“At the end of the class, for the first time we all get to see each other’s paintings and we will realise how different they all are.
“Even though we have been looking at the same picture and been following the same instructions – they will all be absolutely unique and great.” Ian January 2025
Geoff, from Bacup, said: “I come here because my best mate Ian does and I enjoy the experience of being led by someone who knows what they are talking about.”
He said the painting class was good for his soul and a great way to decant frustrations.
Geoff added: “It is a great way to spend a Sunday with like-minded people.”
Former social worker Jane has been involved with VIC for about nine years, starting with the choir and now volunteering to carry out care calls, which first started during Covid as a way of keeping in touch with veterans.
She said: “I did a lot of Bob Ross paintings with VIC on Zoom when I would be painting in my bathroom. The choir also went on Zoom.”
Post Covid I continued with both but said I wanted to do a bit more for the charity and so I helped out when cleaner Carole broke her arm.
“I enjoy the classes and love Darren to bits. During Covid, because I didn’t have any paints, he brought a set round to me and so I made sure I kept them out of the grandkids way and my husband was happy as well.”
